Jazz: Bria Skonberg band
Friday, July 19, 8 pm
Trumpeter, singer, and songwriter Bria Skonberg has been hailed by The Wall Street Journal as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” and has been recognized as one of “25 for the Future” by DownBeat Magazine. The New York City-based Canadian has been “shaking up the jazz world” (Vanity Fair) and has performed at prestigious U.S. venues, from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival to Newport Jazz Festival, and across the globe. Now the JUNO Award-winner is bringing her bold horn melodies and smoky vocals to PS21 for the first time. Her quartet includes piano, bass, and drums and is made up “awesome young players that are well versed in the history of jazz but keep it fresh with their own ideas,” said Skonberg.
“Musically we play everything from Louis Armstrong to Leonard Cohen, as well as originals that fuse together my eclectic musical taste for world rhythms,” said Skonberg. “It’ll have that first time excitement of a new venue. I’m looking forward to meeting the audience who inform a lot of what we do.”

Annual Paul Grunberg Memorial Bach Concert – Mass in B minor
Saturday, July 20, 8 pm
This year’s Annual Paul Grunberg Memorial Bach Concert celebrates Johann Sebastian Bach’s culminating masterpiece, the monumental Mass in B minor, presented by regionally-based Concerts in the Village (CITV). The evening brings together the Chatham Festival Chorus, the resident CITV Broad Street Orchestra, and distinguished soloists, including soprano SeolAh Yoo, mezzo Jardena Gertler-Jaffe, countertenor Daniel Moody, tenor Maximillian Jansen, and baritone Tyler Duncan. More than 80 singers and instrumentalists in total will be performing what the evening’s conductor, David Smith, calls a masterpiece that’s “monumental, universal and transcendent” and “regarded by many as one of the finest in the entire canon of Western music.”
“The Mass in B minor is drama of the highest order, with massed choruses, emotionally intense and frequently intimate arias and duets, orchestral writing of great color – all ordered in a way fully expressive of Bach’s unique genius,” said Smith, the CITV founder and Artistic Director. “CITV is honored to enhance the wonders of PS21’s design with the wonders of Johann Sebastian Bach.”
