OutHudson is recognizing the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall and the tenth LGBTQ pride celebration in Hudson, NY.
The “Faeire Tales” theme for the parade and a week full of events will support OutHudson’s mission of advancing the visibility of LGBTQ people in Columbia County.
HUDSON, NY: OutHudson, a 501(c)(3) organization, whose mission is to improve the quality of life and advance the visibility of LGBTQ people in Columbia County, announced today its weekend of events associated with the OutHudson Pride Festival starting Wednesday, June 12 through Sunday, June 16. A highlight of the weekend will be the LGBTQ Parade, which extends all of Hudson’s historic Warren Street, from the 7th Street Park to the end of Warren at Front Street. Volunteers and participating groups who wish to march are welcome fill out the participation form at www.OutHudson.com.
Tom Duane, Grand Marshal, became the first openly gay and openly HIV+ member of the NYC Council in 1991. At the time he also became the first candidate for public office in the nation elected who ran a campaign while being open about an HIV positive status. In 1998, Tom became the first openly gay New York State Senator and the state legislature’s first openly HIV positive member. Local Law 49, spearheaded by City Council Member Duane 30 years ago, provided for mandated services for men and women living with HIV/AIDS in New York City. Senator Duane has successfully spearheaded many important bills during his legislative career, including introducing New York’s Marriage Equality Act in 2001 and championing it until its passage and enactment in 2011.
Elena Mosely, Grand Marshal, is the director of Operation Unite, New York, Inc. for twenty-seven years and thirteen years as one of Columbia County’s Civil Service Commissioners. Mrs. Mosley’s advocacy for equality can be summed up in her efforts to support students going to college, increase cultural awareness, community service, civic engagement and expression through the arts.
Sherry Vine, Grand Marshal, is a drag legend with almost 30 years under her sequined belt. Sherry tours the world with her all live singing, hilarious comedy shows, starred and wrote the variety show, She’s Living for This (now on Hulu), can be seen in numerous movies and TV shows, is a founding member of Theatre Couture, and is a YouTube sensation where her video parodies have been viewed over 18,000,000 times.
Rich Volo, aka, “Trixie Starr,” OutHudson Director, “In 2010, I organized a small group of people in Hudson to put together the first Pride parade. Now, the TENTH parade, Pride has helped define the City of Hudson, and Columbia County, as a welcoming home for the LGBTQ community. People now move here, open businesses here, and are raising families under the rainbow flags that line Warren Street. Throughout the years, with over sixty contingents, the Pride Parade and Pride Festivities have become one of the largest events in Columbia County.”
Charlie Ferrusi, OutHudson Director, “Our theme, Faerie Tales, ties in the community-focused and anti-establishment Radical Faerie movement, with the queer fairy tale that is Hudson. The nature of Pride in Hudson has always been grassroots, supported and organized entirely by local small businesses and community members. Looking back to our first pride in 2010, I remember the joy of realizing that local LGBTQ kids like me didn’t have to move to big cities to feel proud of who they are. That we had all the love we needed right here in Hudson, in a city of 6,000 people. That feeling of “community” is still incredibly important today, as we celebrate our tenth Pride.”
John M. Schobel, OutHudson Director, “On behalf of the OutHudson, we could not be happier to put on the 10th annual Pride Parade in Hudson. As made clear by the 50th celebration of Stonewall, the entire world is turning its attention to the importance of LGBTQI+ issues. Given the increase in hate crimes, and the conscious efforts to restrict our civil rights, it’s critical that we all continue to celebrate the beautiful diversity of our community. Our Faerie theme expresses that beautifully.”
