Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Announces Three New Performances, Alan Cumming, Capitol Steps & Picker’s Paradise

TROY, NEW YORK     The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall is excited to add three performances to our 2018-2019 season! Actor and Broadway legend Alan Cumming brings his show, Alan Cumming: Legal Immigrant, to the Hall on April 25, we host a hilarious night of improv from the Capitol Steps on May 9, and an evening of bluegrass and tamburitza music with Picker’s Paradise on May 10.

Alan Cumming: Legal Immigrant

Thursday, April 25, 2019, 7:30 PM      Tickets $69.50, $55.50, $45.50, $35.50

Is there anyone who has a more close association with cabaret than Alan Cumming?

On Broadway and the West End he played the Master of Ceremonies in Kander and Ebb’s masterpiece Cabaret, winning a Tony and every other award available in the process.

More recently he has toured the world with his cabaret shows, I Bought A Blue Car Today which debuted at the Lincoln Centre, NYC followed by the Sydney Opera House (he doesn’t believe in starting small) and Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, which earned huge critical acclaim and sold out Carnegie Hall, the London Palladium, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA and the Kennedy Center, Washington DC. He also released albums of the same name.

Now he is back with Legal Immigrant, a meditation on his ten years as an American citizen and the experiences and change he has witnessed during his time living in the States.  With a set list that includes songs made famous by Adele, Peggy Lee and Edith Piaf and composers as diverse as Cole Porter, Sondheim and Schubert, Legal Immigrant is as eclectic, vulnerable and charismatic as Alan Cumming himself.

Capitol Steps

We put the “MOCK” in Democracy!

Thursday, May 9, 2019, 7:30 PM   Tickets: $44.50, $35.50, $29.50

The Capitol Steps, a Washington DC-based comedy troupe that began as a group of Senate Staffers, will present a show based on songs from their current album “Make America Grin Again” at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

The Capitol Steps have elevated political satire to an art form.  Before The Daily Show, Full Frontal, and The Colbert Report, this Washington, DC-based comedy troupe gave audience laugh cramps with their bipartisan lampooning.  The Capitol Steps began in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize their employers, and haven’t let up since.  If you’ve been keeping with the news, you know there’s no shortage of material.  The troupe is coming back to (INSERT City name) with a new show of musical and political comedy.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or Democrat, a snowflake or a deplorable:  neither side is safe from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy!

This performance is sponsored by CDPHP “Laughter is the Best Medicine!”

Pickers’ Paradise: From the Balkans to Bluegrass

Friday, May 10, 2019, 7:30 PM     Tickets: $15, Students $5

Bluegrass and tamburitza music are two dazzling, virtuosic string ensemble traditions with deep roots in American communities. Though these two distinctive styles emerged out of very different cultural communities—one is rooted in urban/industrial immigrant culture, while the other was born in the uplands of the American South—they have much in common, so much so, in fact, that tamburitza has been hailed as the bluegrass of the Balkans.

Pickers’ Paradise features two groups, Tamburaški Sastav Ponoć from Pittsburgh and Danny Knicely’s Next Generation from the Shenandoah Valley, with some of the finest young musicians carrying these traditions into the 21st century. The cross-cultural musical sparks will fly and the jams will sizzle when these artists meet and trade licks on stage

This engagement of Pickers Paradise: From Balkans to Bluegrass is made possible through the Folk and Traditional Arts Touring Network program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in collaboration with the National Council for the Traditional Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets go on sale to Music Hall Members tomorrow, Tuesday, January 29, 2019.  Anyone can become a member and gain access to the pre-sale.  Single tickets go on sale to the general public this Thursday, January 31, 2019 via phone, (518) 273-0038, in person, or online at www.troymusichall.org.   Tickets are available at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Box Office, 30 Second Street, Troy, Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  More information on the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and upcoming programs is available on the website at www.troymusichall.org.
