Barrington Stage Company to Hold the Great Berkshire Bake Off June 10

(Pittsfield, MA) Barrington Stage Company (BSC), the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, is holding The Great Berkshire Bake Off in conjunction with its summer production of The Cake (June 21 – July 15).

The Great Berkshire Bake Off, sponsored by Barrington Stage and The Berkshire Eagle, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to prove that you are the Great Berkshire Baker. Like The Cake’s Della (played by award-winning actress Debra Jo Rupp) – do you have what it takes to be the Great Berkshire Baker?

There are two Great Berkshire Baker categories: Adults and Kids under 16.

To enter, contestants should send in recipe and upload photo of their cake to: and include a brief essay (100-300 words) on “why you qualify” to be The Great Berkshire Baker. Deadline for applying is midnight on June 1, 2018. Only completed applications will be considered. Finalists will be notified on June 4, 2018. All finalists commit and must be present for tasting/judging on June 10. Cakes will be judged on creativity, taste, and presentation.

Pittsfield business owner, Mary McGinnis from Mary’s Carrot Cake along with members of the BSC staff will narrow down the entries to 5 finalists in each category. If you are a finalist, you will be required to showcase your cake at the judging event, plus have tastings for 50 (tastings are really one bite size – tasting cups will be provided).

THE GREAT BERKSHIRE BAKER JUDGING EVENT AND CAKE PARTY will be held Sunday, June 10 at 4:00pm at the Wolfson Center, 122 North Street, Pittsfield. Come and enjoy family and frosting as they collide in this interactive, fun, tasty event and determine The Great Berkshire Baker!  Along with the esteemed panel of judges – Debra Jo Rupp, Mary McGinnis and Michael Taylor – you will be part of determining the winner. Come enjoy cake and ice cream. Ice cream provided by SoCo Creamery. Winners will be announced at 5:00pm.

Prizes to include (each category): A Commemorative Cake Plate, 4 tickets to The Cake, Signed Poster by the Cast, selected BSC Merchandise, and a $35 Gift Card to SoCo Creamery.

First runner up (each category):  4 tickets to The Cake, Signed Poster by the Cast, $15 Gift Card to SoCo Creamery


Debra Jo Rupp: Last seen at Barrington Stage in Kimberly Akimbo (Berkshire Theatre Award) and Love Letters. Broadway: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Kathleen Turner. Off Broadway: Becoming Dr. Ruth (Drama Desk, Outer Critics, CT Critics Circle nominee); A Girl’s Guide to Chaos; Frankie and Johnnie in the Claire de Lune, The Butcher of Bara-boo (Second Stage). Recent regional: The Cake (LA Stage Ovation Award, LA Drama Critics Circle Award), Deathtrap (Berkshire Theatre Group), Madagascar (Chester), Annapurna (TheaterWorks Hartford), True West, A Flea in Her Ear (Williamstown). Mary McGinnis: Owner of Mary’s Carrot Cake, created her 27 ingredient carrot cake recipe 28 years ago. Challenged by co-workers to create the most gourmet carrot cake around, she reached out to many local establishments to find the right ingredients. The recipe has local Vanilla made in West Stockbridge at Baldwin’s Extracts, King Arthur Flour Whole Wheat and White, Maple Syrup, 4 spices, and many other ingredients. Meeting the actors, partaking in feeding the actors cake , meeting their families and friends. Mary looks at the Stage as “Broadway’s Incubator” and feels each performance has a caliber worthy of that status.  

Michael Taylor: Taylor, a city hall employee by day and baker by night, started up “Mikey T’s” in 2012 — a home-grown business specializing in gourmet cupcakes, small cakes and cheesecakes. For Taylor, baking came naturally. He has previously won awards that include:  NAMI’s Cupcake Wars (2015) and two-time winner of Dottie’s Cupcake Showdown!
