WTF artists Lee Overtree and Laura Savia will lead a workshop open to anyone in Western Massachusetts, to join in WTF’s year-round community theatre program. CommunityWorks brings together hundreds of Berkshire residents from all walks of life to connect with each other and create a production on the Main Stage in the summer Festival.
In July of 2015, Artistic Director Mandy Greenfield, Associate Director Laura Savia and Obie Award-winning playwright Lucy Thurber set out to create an immersive theatre project that would build relationships with neighbors in the Berkshires.
Each fall, winter, and spring, WTF staff and artists lead acting, playwriting and story-circle workshops with locals to build trust, teach theatre skills and hear stories that inspire a summer play.
Community cast members, many first-time actors, rehearse in the same spaces as WTF veterans and perform with music and choreography. People meet in an environment that encourages acceptance and risk-taking. People living close together who might otherwise never have met become a supportive group, and the community has responded. Last summer’s performance brought in more than 2,000 people.
