Innovative humorist Dirck Toll returns for his first Capital Region show in three years to present another series of hilariously out-of-the-ordinary stories, this time making his first appearance at Schenectady’s Mopco Theatre, on Sunday April 8 at 7:00 PM. And like his last area show at Saratoga’s Caffè Lena, Toll’s portion of ticket sales will once again be donated to Girl Rising, a campaign for girls’ rights to education worldwide.
Toll specializes in humor that springs from unexpected twists of ideas and behavior, and this show finds him single-handedly acting out stories that feature a bizarre small-business setback, a deviously inept songwriting scam, an aggressive passer-by, and a sarcastic piece of office furniture.
Toll’s career has literally spanned coast to coast, with shows from Newport, Rhode Island to San Francisco, California. Locally, Toll’s appearances have drawn enthusiastic audiences and attentive praise from many area publications. “I enjoy reading about myself,” Toll acknowledges, “even when my name gets misspelled as ‘Troll’ or ‘Tool.’”
Toll’s share of ticket sales will be donated to Girl Rising, a global campaign to eliminate barriers to education faced by millions of girls worldwide – forced early marriage, gender-based violence, domestic slavery, sex trafficking, economic discrimination. Toll points out, “In many places, poor treatment of women starts with poor treatment of girls. Addressing that, and insuring that girls have the same access to education as boys, will, I think, lead to a healthier planet.” More information about Girl Rising is at girlrising.com.
