NorthEast Theatre Ensemble Presents “The Little Foxes”

NorthEast Theatre Ensemble presents The Little Foxes, Lillian
Hellman’s classic tale of greed set in a small Alabama town at the turn of
the last century.

Written in 1939 it is definitely considered a classic of 20th century
drama. The title comes from Chapter 2, Verse 15 of the Song of Solomon in
the King James version of the Bible, which reads, “Take us the foxes, the
little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” Set
in a small town in Alabama in 1900, it focuses on the struggle for control
of a family business. It was Dorothy Parker who suggested the title..
Ben, Oscar, and Regina, siblings, conspire plot and scheme to get what they
want while the rest of the family feels the fallout.

Lillian Hellman’s riveting drama captures the story of a Southern family
whose selfish pursuit of the American Dream ends up destroying them and
those they love. The Hubbards are bound together by blood, but ripped apart
by disparate desires. Their simple house servant states, “There are people
who eat the earth and other people who stand around and watch them do it.”

The Hubbards are those who “eat the earth.” Three siblings –the
manipulative, scheming Regina; the cruel and arrogant Oscar; and the
possessive Benjamin– have decided to partner together to increase their
already substantial, ill-gotten wealth. There is only one problem: Regina’s
terminally ill husband, Horace, is refusing to give them the $75,000 they
need. And so begins a vicious circle of lying, scheming, cruelty, and
finally, murder. In the end, blood and money mix, with money coming out on
top, leaving a broken family behind.

The Little Foxes is just as timely now as when written. Come join the Hubbards at Ten Broeck Mansion for a night of site specific theatre where you will peek into the lives of
people behaving very badly!
