Greg Reiner to head NEA’s Theater and Musical Theater Division

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced this week that Greg Reiner will join the NEA as the director of theater and musical theater starting on September 8, 2015. Reiner will manage NEA grantmaking in theater and musical theater and represent the agency to the field.

Most recently, Reiner was executive director of Classic Stage Company in New York City, where he launched CSC’s Musical Theater Initiative, the organization’s largest fundraising campaign, and implemented new education programs such as a Teen Council and a Shakespeare scene and monologue competition. Prior to that, Reiner was founding executive director of Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, where he received a Tony nomination for Best Play as one of the producers of 33 Variations. At Tectonic, Reiner also designed and managed the simultaneous opening of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later in 150 theaters in all 50 states, DC, and eight countries, on the same night, with livestreaming and social media outreach. Reiner has also served as managing director at The Actors’ Gang in Culver City, California, and at the Shakespeare Festival/LA.

“One of the most exciting moments in my career was getting to know theater-makers across the nation through the launch of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, and realizing the collective power of the American theater field,” said Reiner. “I’m incredibly humbled and excited for the opportunity to serve this community through my new role at the NEA.”

Reiner received his bachelor’s degree in communications from Loyola Marymount University in 1998.

The National Endowment for the Arts offers grants to the nonprofit theater and musical theater fields for the production or presentation of traditional or classical repertoire, new plays and musicals, development laboratories, showcases, artist residencies, work for young audiences, experimental work, community-based work, outdoor historical dramas, and puppetry.

Recent grants include support for the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts in Columbus, Ohio, for a partnership with Deaf West to produce a bilingual American Sign Language/English production of American Buffalo by David Mamet, and support to La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club for a new adaptation of Pylades, a story within the Oresteia trilogy of Greek tragedies. In FY 2014 alone, the NEA awarded more than $6 million to 269 theater and musical theater projects across the country.

Q&A with Greg Reiner from LMU

What can parents do to help younger generations get excited about theater?

Greg Reiner: “The most important thing is exposure — finding ways to get younger audiences to see the theater. Clearly, making ticket prices lower is a good thing, and so is trusting what young people are capable of understanding and appreciating.”

What’s the future of theatre?

Greg Reiner: I’m not sure it’s sustainable to keep increasing income by charging more money rather than increasing audience. It seems we will more shows adapted from familiar movies and more jukebox musicals that are just compilations of existing work. If we’re not careful, that could lead to the death of originality. But that trend makes the case for the nonprofit, subsidized theater. Off-Broadway, regional theaters and community theaters should be places to incubate new ideas and new work.

“If you look at the last five years of Tony award-winners for new plays, musicals and, in some cases, revivals, I bet that 90 percent originated in the nonprofit theater. Now, the commercial theaters depend on the nonprofit “ecosystem” to generate what the Tony award voters are saying are the best new plays.”
