LENOX: SummerSound Fest Music for Tanglewood Memorial Day: Indigo Girls, Barefoot Truth, more

It’s sort of a down home version of Mass MoCA and Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival, but it’s a first class event too, and the organizers are already busy selling tickets to those in the know, and we want to share this event’s details with our readers. After all, it’s pretty much the big kickoff to the summer in The Berkshires. Most everything else follows this event.

Two Day live music festival will feature multiple live artists at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox on Saturday, May 23, 2015 starting at noon and Sunday, May 24, 2015 at 7:00pm.

Meanwhile here’s what we know about SummerSound – Saturday has two hot bands:

Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are Indigo Girls. Rolling Stone describes them as the “ideal duet partners. Their voices soar and swoop as one, alternately raucous and soothing. When they sing together, they radiate a sense of shared purpose that adds muscle to their lanky, deeply felt folk-tinged pop songs”. Together they write, arrange, record and perform music which over the course of twenty five years has become a vital part of the lives of their legion of devoted fans around the world, informing and rewarding them day to day.

Since their conception, eleven band West End Blend has been playing their version of hip-hop, soul-funk in venues all over. Fronted by vocalist Erica Bryan and rapper/breakdancer “Tangsauce”, the band pays homage to classic throwback sounds while still adding their own distinct sound and flair to their collectively-composed originals.

West End Blend boasts a full four-piece horn section, two guitars, bass, keys and percussion to boot, packing the group onto stages every night. From humble beginnings in an epic basement funk dance party, The Blend’s goal has always been to bring a party atmosphere to every show and venue ever since.

Sunday has four main attractions:

Anyone familiar with the Pimps of Joytime live experience knows the feeling—that moment when a deep bluesy groove morphs into a full-on EDM dance beat, or the sensation when their wide-eyed audience collectively elevates in sync with the band’s tangible energy. You might accurately call this Brooklyn-bred quintet a ‘post-genre’ band; they’re a group whose sound—even within a single song—mirrors the diversity of our era’s wide musical tastes, like mashing up ‘70s funk with a house beat, or memorable hooks infused with three part vocal harmonies. It all goes into the Pimps’ pot, over a soulful roux of rhythm and groove.

Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds is an eight piece powerhouse that puts a modern spin on classic soul. The band is led by Arleigh Kincheloe (Sister Sparrow), whose astoundingly powerful voice and sly demeanor make for a spellbinding presence onstage. She is backed by the mighty force of The Dirty Birds, a flock of seven men who masterfully lay down thundering grooves and soaring melodies. While each of the Birds are capable of lighting up the stage with jaw dropping displays of musicianship, it’s clear they’re focused on delivering the band’s infectious music as a single entity. Simply put, the band’s live show is explosive.

In the small New England town of Mystic, Connecticut, lives Barefoot Truth, an independent band that is quietly creating history. You have never seen them on MTV, nor heard them on a Top 40 FM radio station, but with over 7 million spins on Pandora, Barefoot Truth has quickly become a symbol of independent music success, and just may be ‘the biggest band you’ve never heard of’. Mixing the sounds of folk, rock, jazz, and reggae, with lyrics full of unbridled optimism, the band has crafted a sound that is distinctly Barefoot Truth.

Grown locally from the rolling green hills of Berkshire County Massachusetts, The Interlopers is best described as a young, organic, smile and joy-inducing musical organism. Now residing in Boston, MA, all 5 members attend Berklee College of Music, having just finished their first tour of the North East. The band made appearances at famous clubs such as Infinity Hall in Norfolk, CT, The Bitter End in NYC, and The Iron Horse in Northampton.

Food trucks will offer vittles, while craft beer will be available from Big Elm Brewery. I will be on the lookout for Titan Tea who will be sampling and selling some awesome iced tea for teetotalers.
