Albany, NY: Capital Repertory Theatre has announced its 2013-14 season, featuring two world premieres, three regional premieres and a musical to be announced.
A Snappy Season

Capital Rep’s 33rd season begins in July with the world premiere of singer-songwriter Lori Fisher’s new country musical, THE SPARKLEY CLEAN FUNERAL SINGERS, followed by the sizzling Broadway hit VENUS IN FUR by David Ives; a sparkling new adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Patrick Barlow (creator of Broadway’s THE 39 STEPS); the regional premiere of THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall; a musical to be announced; and the world premiere of Suzanne Bradbeer’s THE GOD GAME, the runaway hit of the Capital Rep/Proctors NEXT ACT NEW PLAY SUMMIT in the Fall of 2012.
Describing the season, Capital Rep’s Producing Artistic Director, Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill, says,  “I’m wild about this season.  This collection of work has the kind of scope that really speaks to the transformation of our diverse community.
“It’s gratifying to be able to produce two world premieres,” she adds. “Creating new work on our stage speaks not only to the groundwork we’ve laid with our play development efforts, but also to our Capital Region audiences’ enthusiasm for the works presented here.  We’re all a part of the creative class when this kind of risk-taking is supported.”

Kicking off Capital Rep’s 33rd season, audiences will be treated to the world premiere of a country musical, THE SPARKLEY CLEAN FUNERAL SINGERS with a book by Lori Fischer and music and lyrics by Fischer and Don Chaffer. Capital Region patrons will remember this pair’s earlier off-Broadway, hit musical, BARBARA’S BLUE KITCHEN, which made its debut at Adirondack Theatre Festival in 2000 and went on to a successful run at the Lambs Theatre in New York.

THE SPARKLEY CLEAN FUNERAL SINGERS tells the story of two sisters, Junie and Lashley, who care for their aging father, while running the family’s failing dry cleaning business.  When the talented siblings decide to write songs for the local funeral parlor to give deceased locals a personal send off, the funny and touching high-jinks begin.  This country musical features Fischer, a celebrated singer-songwriter, in the central role of Junie. SPARKLEY begins previews on July 5 and runs through August 4.

Fall brings the regional premiere of VENUS IN FUR, David Ives sizzling Broadway hit that redefined sexual comedy.  This suspense-packed study of the erotics of power features Vanda, an out-of-work actress who turns the tables on an important writer, who could make or break her career.  Male and female roles embark on a roller-coaster ride in this sexual roundelay about power and powerlessness.  VENUS starts previews on Sept. 27 and runs though Oct. 27.  (This play contains adult language and subject matter.)

The holidays bring a brand new adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens’ story of redemption and transformation, A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Patrick Barlow, author of the dazzling Broadway hit, THE 39 STEPS.  Re-imagined with a fresh new physicality for five actors, this highly theatrical and moving adaptation features elements of surprise from this creative author.
A CHRISTMAS CAROLstarts previews on November 22 and runs through December 22.

The last night of Martin Luther King’s life is the subject of Katori Hall’s stirring play, THE MOUNTAINTOP.  An unexpected visit from a feisty, young hotel maid pushes King into a confrontation with his doubts, fears and haunting premonitions. The man behind the public image and the great ideals that formed a new America come alive in this soul-stirring hit from London and Broadway.  THE MOUNTAINTOP starts previews on January 17 and runs through February 16.

Spring brings an imaginative staging of a well-known musical. Its title will be announced at a later date.

The World Premiere of Suzanne Bradbeer’s political drama, THE GOD GAME,rounds out the season.  The play, which won accolades from audiences at last fall’s NEXT ACT NEW PLAY SUMMIT, chronicles the dilemma of Tom, a moderate Republican senator who is plucked to be the Vice-Presidential running mate for a conservative Presidential candidate.  Trouble arises when Tom, an avowed agnostic, is asked if he can sound “a bit more Christian” on the campaign trail.  THE GOD GAME starts previews on May 2 and runs through June 1.

In addition to the six plays in the regular season, Capital Rep and Proctors once again will harness their resources to produce the 2nd NEXT ACT NEW PLAY SUMMIT, Nov 2-4.  A national call for play and musical submissions will start later this spring.  The top three works will receive staged readings during the three-day event, which will also feature artist receptions and special workshops.
