North Adams, MA: Superhuman Happiness’s unique combination of funky Afrobeat and infectious electronica brought to life by multiple instrumentalists including charismatic percussionists and brass players has been winning huge dance audiences in New York: their big sound and fantastic percussion will turn Mass MoCA’s Club B-10 into Dance Club B-10 on Saturday, February 2, at 8 PM. The band’s joyful spirit, described as “physical, cinematic dance rock”, vibrates through melody and rhythm in upbeat, feel-good stage shows.

Founder Stuart Bogie is the tenor saxophonist, conductor, and composer of Afrobeat group Antibalas, which played a sold out dance party at Mass MoCA in January 2003 and is now the house band for the hit Broadway musical Fela! about late Nigerian singer Fela Kuti. In 2008, Bogie united musicians from a variety of genres to form Superhuman Happiness. Bogie and his bandmates come from uptown, downtown, and midtown to create Superhuman Happiness’s particular brand of “upbeat, tribal style of dance music”, as cited by NYC Taper. Bogie’s musical resume alone includes performances with everyone from Paul Simon and Iron and Wine to Public Enemy and Wu-Tang Clan. He is equally comfortable collaborating with indie music darlings Bats for Lashes, Passion Pit, and The Head and The Heart and hip-hop artists The Roots and Wale.

Bogie described to the deli magazine how the variety of musical pedigrees the band brings into the studio strengthens Superhuman Happiness: “I find every artistic utterance that crosses our paths can enter our music, whether it’s a line from a favorite record or something your best friend said…One of the things you do when you play with people is share your style and habits, so you grow to gather as artists. ” This studio-as-a-playground mentality flavors the group’s live performance as well. In concert, the musicians often take liberties with the song structure of extended dance-worthy jam sequences. The fruitful collaboration yielded a debut EP, Fall Down Seven Times Stand Up Eight, in 2008 and another EP, Physical, in 2011.
