Minerva Arts Center collaborating on World Premiere of Lisa Westkaemper’s “Tiger”

From our News Desk: The Minerva Arts Center is partnering with UnCommonWill, and will present the world premiere of the play Tiger by Texas playwright Lisa Westkaemper, under the direction of Alva Hascall, also of Texas. The production will preview on August 17, 2011, followed by opening night on August 18. Subsequent performances will run through August 28.

According to their press release, Tiger is the story of one family’s unstoppable deterioration — “a blazing slide straight through dysfunction into utter destruction.” Witnessed through the eyes of the younger daughter, Tiger, the play shows us her predicament, her memories and future life, always focusing on her insatiable and unfulfilled need for approval, love and reassurance from the inadequate family members who inhabit her world. The universe of the play is described as “visceral, riveting and inherently theatrical.”

Tiger has had the benefit of an extensive workshop process in Texas, with the participation of MAC executive director Edward Cating and artistic director Kathleen O’Mara. The play’s world premiere at the MAC represents a geographically wide-ranging collaboration among theater artists from Massachusetts, Texas, New York and Iowa. It is indicative of the MAC’s commitment to bringing new work to the Berkshire summer theater season.

In addition to the production’s core artistic team, which will be in residence during August, several key roles will be filled locally, including the pivotal role of Tiger as a young girl. Director Alva Hascall and playwright Westkaemper will be in North Adams for casting sessions in July. Those interested in auditioning should contact The Minerva Arts Center.

The Minerva Arts Center is a collaborative organization, serving Northwest Massachusetts with both performance and gallery space for regional and visiting artists; the MAC also provides classes in a variety of disciplines. The MAC operates under the artistic direction of Minerva Stage, which was founded in 1996 by Kathleen O’Mara. It is located at 1288 Massachusetts Avenue in North Adams, MA, in the former Our Lady of the Incarnation Church in the Historic Blackinton neighborhood.
